Progress so far – finding our inspirational women in The Lothians

This is an exciting week for our project; some of the first interviews have been arranged and we’re looking forward to the WEA Scotland event on Thursday. Here’s a quick update on progress to date…

Who have we found so far?

The Lothians are abuzz with inspirational women. Some of the nominations received so far include a leading academic, outstanding sportsperson and ambassador for young women in Engineering; a candidate in the upcoming Scottish Parliamentary elections; a woman who has campaigned and represented Scotland’s young women in international forums including the United Nations and World YWCA; a campaigner working hard to break the cycle of FGM in Scotland; the coordinator of a space for civic debate in Edinburgh North and Leith; and the founder of a national charity which has developed a new arts-based approach to supporting vulnerable families in The Lothians.  These are just a few of our inspirational women; there are plenty more out there in the wilds of Edinburgh, so let’s have your nominations!

How are we managing the search?

There are three strands in our efforts to find out about the work of inspirational women creating change in our communities. We are:

  • running an open call for nominations through social media channels
  • contacting organisations with extensive networks across The Lothians
  • reviewing nominees and prize winners of awards that focus on people in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas

I’d like to nominate myself or someone I know – how do I do that?

To nominate a potential change maker just:

  • email Research Director Lorraine Simpson via
  • or make your suggestion via twitter @thelinesbetweet using #breakingthemould2016

I’ve forgotten, what’s happening on Thursday?

WEA Scotland are holding a national showcasing and learning event at Perth Concert Hall
on 31st March with speakers Lesley Riddoch and Lesley Orr.  There will be  exhibitions, workshops and more.
